If you are going through a time of isolation, seemingly all alone, read John 17. It will explain exactly why you are where you are - because Jesus has prayed that you "may be one" with the Fathter as He is. Are you helping God to answer that prayer, or do you have some other goal for your life? Since you became a disciple, you cannot be as independent as you used to be.

 

God reveals in John 17 that his purpose is not just to anwser our prayers, but that through prayer we might come to discern His mind. Yet there is one prayer which God must answer, and that is the prayer of Jesus - " . . . that they may be one just as We are one . . . " (John 17:22). Are we as close to Jesus Christ as that?

 

God is not concerned about our plans; He doesn't ask, "Do you want to go through this loss of a loved one, this difficulty, or this defeat?" No, He allows these things for His own purpose. The things we are going through are either making us sweeter, better, and nobler men and women, or they are making us more critical and fault-finding, and more insistent on our own way. The things that happen either make us evil, or they make us more saintly, depending entirely on our relationship with God and its level of intimacy. If we will pray, regarding our own lives, "Your will be done" (Matthew 26:42), then we will be encouraged and comforted by John 17, knowing that our Father is working accordng to His own wisdom, accomplishing what is best. When we understand God's purpose, we will not become small-minded and cynical. Jesus prayed nothing less for us than absolute oneness with Himself, just as He was one with the Father. Some of us are far from this oneness; yet

God will not leave us alone

until we are one with Him-

because Jesus prayed,

" . . . that they all may be one . . .."

만약 당신이 고독한 시간을 보내고 있다면, 겉으로 보기에 완전히 혼자인 것 같다면 요한복음 17장을 읽어보길 바란다. 당신이 왜 그 자리에 있는 정확히 설명해 줄 것이다- 예수님은 당신 자신이 하나님과 하나인 것처럼 우리도 "하나가 되길" 기도하셨다. 당신은 저 기도에 대한 응답을 바라는가 아니면 당신 인생에 다른 목표가 있는가? 당신이 제자가 되었다면 예전처럼 독립적일 수 없는 이유이다.

 

요한복음 17장에서 하나님께서는 그의 목적은 우리의 기도에 응답하시는 것이 아니라 우리가 하나님의 뜻을 알아차리기 바라시는 것이라고 말씀하신다.

하나님께서 반드시 응답하시는 기도는 예수님의 기도이다- ' . . . 우리가 하나인 것같이 저희도 하나 되게 하소서. ' 이 기도처럼

우리는 예수님과 하나가 될 만큼 가까운가?

 

하나님은 우리의 계획에 대해서는 관심이 없으시다; 그분은 " 너는 사랑하는 사람을 잃은 고통이나 어려움을 극복하거나 이기기를 원하느냐?"라고 묻지 않으신다. 그분은 이러한 것들을 그분의 목적을 위해 허락하신다. 그러한 고통들은 우리를 좀 더 다정하거나, 더 나은 사람이 되거나 품격 있는 사람이 되게 만들 수도 있고, 더 비판적이고, 까칠하고 고집 센 사람으로 만들 수도 있다. 우리가 사탄이 되거나 성도가 되는 것은 오직 하나님과의 관계에 달려 있다.

우리가 우리 삶 전체를 온전히 맡기며 " 당신의 일이 이루어지이다"(마 26:42)라고 기도한다면, 요한복음 17장을 통해 우리는 격려와 위로를 받고, 우리의 하늘 아버지께서 그분의 지혜로 가장 좋은 것을 성취하시고 계시다는 것을 알게 된다.

우리가 하나님의 목적을 알게 되면 우리는 편협해지거나 냉소적인 사람이 되지 않는다. 예수님께서는 우리를 위하여 기도하실 때 그 무엇보다 주님이 아버지와 하나 됨 같이 우리도 주님과 완전하게 하나 되길 기도하셨다. 우리 중에는 이러한 하나 됨과 너무 멀리 있는 사람도 있다. 그러나

하나님께서는

우리가 주님과 하나가 될 때까지

절대로 우리를 홀로 두고 떠나지 않으신다. 그 이유는

예수님께서 우리가 그렇게 되도록

기도하셨기 때문이다.
