Indeed the hour is coming . . . that you will be scattered . . .
John 16:32
Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barenness, to know what internal death to God's blessings means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner empiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life.
" . . . you . . . will leave Me alone." Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us?
Are we prepared to be separated from the outward,
evident blessngs of God?
Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord,
we each have goals of our own which we serve.
Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry.
If we are willing to wait,
we will see God pointing out that
we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself.
The sense of God's blessings is fundamental.
". . . be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" ( John 16:33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need."
"너희가 다 흩어져서 각자 제 갈 길을 가고 나를 혼자 버려 둘 때가 오는데 그때가 벌써 왔다. 그러나 아버지께서 나와 함께 계시므로 나는 혼자 있는 것이 아니다." (요한복음 16:32).
이는 예수님이 제자들을 꾸짖으신 말씀이 아니다. 제자들의 믿음은 진실했지만 조금이라도 혼란을 만나면 초점을 잃고 현실에 적용하지 못하는 믿음이었다.
제자들은 각자 관심사를 따라 흩어져 예수 그리스도 와는 상관없는 일에 몰두하고 있었다. 성령의 역사로 거룩하게 되어 하나님과 진정으로 교제하는 사람은 일상생활에서 믿음을 실현해야 한다. 우리는 때로 흩어져 주님의 일을 하지 못하고 내적 공허감에 빠진다. 사방이 황폐한 곳에서 하나님에 축복이 끊어진 내적 죽음이 무엇을 의미하는지 보게 된다. 이것을 겪을 각오가 되어 있는가? 물론 우리가 선택할 수 있는 일은 아니다. 섭리하시는 하나님이 환경을 주관하셔서 거기에 이르게 하신다. 이러한 체험을 할 때까지 우리의 믿음은 느낌과 축복들로 지탱되고 있다. 그러나 이 황폐한 내적 체험을 거치면 하나님이 우리를 어디에 두 시든 지, 어떤 심적 고난을 주시든지 하나님을 찬양할 수 있다. 이것이 현실에서 역사하시는 믿음이다.
"너희가 나를 혼자 둘 때가 오다니." 하나님의 섭리로 흩어져 예수님을 홀로 남겨두고 있는가? 주위에 하나님이 보이지 않기 때문인가? 우리에게 온 이 어둠은 하나님의 섭리로 인한 것이다. 하나님이 원하시는 대로 우리를 대하시도록 허락해야 한다.
하나님의 축복을 전혀 느낄 수 없는 자리에 떨어질 각오가 되어 있는가?
예수 그리스도가 나의 주님이 되시기 전에는 누구나 자기 목표를 섬긴다. 우리의 믿음은 진실하긴 하지만 영구적이지 못하다. 그러나 하나님은 조금도 서두르지 않는다.
하나님을 기다리라.
그러면 하나님이
우리가 하나님 자신보다는 그분의 축복에만 관심이 있음을
지적해 주실 것이다.
축복에 이끌리는 것은 믿음의 초보적 단계이다.
"담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라"(요한복음 16:33)는
말씀을 믿는 굳건한 영적 담력이 필요하다.
