Joab withstood the greatest test of his life, remaining absolutely loyal to David by not turning to follow after the fascinating and ambtious Absalom. Yet toward the end of his life he turned to follow after the weak and cowardly Adonijah. Always remain alert to the fact that where one person has turned back is exactly where anyone may be tempted to turn back (see 1 Corinthians 10:11-13). You may have just victoriously gone through a great crisis, but now be alert about the things that may appear to be the least likely to tempt you. Beware of thinking that the areas of your life where you have experenced victory in the past are now the least likely to cause you to stumble and fall.

 

We are apt to say, "It is not at all likely that having been through the greatest crisis of my life I would now turn back to the things of the world. " Do not try to predict where the temptation will come; it is the least likely thing that is the real danger. It is in the aftermath of a great spiritual event that the least likely things begin to have an effect. They may not be forceful and dominant, but they are there. And if you are not careful to be forewarned, they will trip you. You have remained true to God under great and intense trials - now beware of the undercurrent. Do not be abnormally examining your inner self, looking forward with dread, but stay alert; keep your memory sharp before God. Unguarded strength is actually a double weakness, because that is where the least likely temptations will be effectrive in sapping strength. The Bible characters stumbled over their strong points, never their weak ones.

요압 그의 인생에서 가장 어려운 시험을 견뎠다. 유혹적이고 야망 있는 압살롬을 따르지 않고 다윗에 대한 충성의 자세를 지켜냈었다. 하지만 결국 인생 후반에 다윗을 배신하고 비겁한 아도니아를 따랐다. 사람은 누구나 외면하고 돌아섰던 곳으로 다시 돌아가라는 유혹을 받을 수 있음을 늘 명심해야 한다. 당신은 큰 위기들을 잘 견뎌 왔을 수 있다. 그렇다면 이제 유혹 같지도 않은 작은 일들을 조심해야 한다. 지난날 승리한 그 영역이 다시는 당신을 실족해하지 못할 것이라고 자만해서는 안 된다.

 

우리는 쉽게 장담한다. "그런 커다란 위기들을 견딘 내가 이제 와서 다시 세상에 눈을 돌리겠는가?" 유혹이 어디에서 올 것인지 예측하려 하지 말라. 정말 위험한 유혹은 전혀 생각지 않은 곳에서 온다. 심각한 영적 사건을 치른 후에는 사소한 유혹들이 나타나게 마련이다. 당신을 억압하고 지배할 수 없는 일이지만 분명히 숨어서 당신을 기다리고 있다. 미리 경계하지 않으면 걸려 넘어지고 말 것이다. 힘든 시련 속에서도 하나님을 향한 믿음을 지켜온 당신, 지금은 보이지 않는 물 밑을 주의해야 한다. 겁을 먹고 자신의 내면을 지나치게 살필 필요는 없지만 항상 경계해야 한다. 당신의 기억을 하나님 앞에서 새롭게 해야 한다. 방심한 일이 사실은 갑절이나 위험하다. 바로 거기에서 예상 못 한 유혹이 우리를 쓰러뜨리기 때문이다. 성경의 인물들은 약점에서 실족하지 않는다. 강하다고 생각한 점에서 공격받고 넘어졌다. 우리의 유일한 안전책은 이것이다. "너희가 하나님의 능력으로 보호하심을 입었나니"(베드로전서 1:5).
