As soon as you begin to live the life of faith in God, fascinating and physically gratifying possibilies will open up before you. These things are yours by right, but if you are living the life of faith you will exercise your right to waive your rights, and let God make your choice for you. God sometimes allows you to get into a place of testing where your own welfare would be the appropriate thing to consider, if you were not living the life of faith. But if you are, you will joyfully waive your right and allow God to make your choice for you. This is the discipline God uses to transform the natural into the spiritual through obedience to His voice.

 

Whenever our right becomes the guiding factor of our lives, it dulls our spiritual insight. The greatest enemy of the life of faith in God is not sin, but good choices which are not quite good enough. The good is always the enemy of the best. In this passage, it would seem that the wiset thing in the world for Abram to do would be to choose. It was his right, and the people around him would consider him to be a fool for not choosing.

 

Many of us do not continue to grow spiritually because we prefer to choose on the basis of our rights, instead of relying on God to make the choice for us.

 

We have to learn to walk according to the standard which has its eyes focused on God. And God says to us, as He did to Abram, " . . .walk before Me . . ." (Genesis 17:1).

당신이 하나님을 믿는 삶을 살기 시작하는 순간, 매혹적이고 육체적으로 만족스러운 가능성이 당신 앞에 열릴 것이다. 이러한 것들은 당신의 권리에 의해 주장할 수 있는 것들이지만 당신이 믿음의 삶을 시작한다면 당신의 권리를 버릴 권리를 사용하게 되고 하나님께서 당신을 위해 선택하시는 인생을 살게 될 것이다.

하나님은 종종 평안하게 사는 것이 당연하다고 생각하는 시험의 자리에 당신을 두신다. 이때 믿음의 삶을 살고 있는 사람은 기꺼이 자신을 포기하고 하나님의 선택을 기다릴 것이다. 하나님은 이 훈련을 통해 육신적인 사람을 영적인 사람으로 바꿔 가신다.

내 권리를 주장할 때마다 영적 통찰력은 둔화되어 신앙생활에 인도를 받는데 차질이 생긴다. 하나님을 믿는 삶에 있어서 가장 큰 적은 죄가 아닌 선, 최선이 아닌 어설픈 선이다.

제법 좋은 선은 최선의 가장 큰 적이다. 롯과 땅 문제가 생겼을 때 아브라함에게는 선택권이 있었다. 스스로 선택하는 것이 가장 현명한 일처럼 보셨을 것이다. 그것은 그가 행사할 수 있는 당연한 권리였다. 주위 사람들은 선택하지 않는 아브라함을 보며 바보라고 생각했을 것이다.

우리 중 많은 사람이 영적으로 계속 성장하지 못하는 것은 하나님이 우리를 위해 해 주시기를 바라지 않고 스스로 옳다고 생각하는 일을 선택하고 싶어 하기 때문이다.

초점을 온전히 하나님께 맞춘 생활수준을 익히며 살아야 한다. 그러면 하나님은 아브라함에게 하셨던 말씀을 우리에게도 하실 것이다.

" 너는 내 앞에서 행하라 " (창세기 17장 1절).
