Pray without ceasing . . .

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Our thinking about prayer, whether right or wrong, is based on our own mental conception of it. The correct concept is to think of prayer as the breath in our lungs and the blood from our hearts. Our blood flows and our breathing continues "without ceasing"; we are not even conscious of it, but it never stops. And we are not always conscious of Jesus keeping us in perfect oneness with God, but if we are obeying Him, He always is. Prayer is not an exercise, it is the life of the saint. Beware of anything that stops the offering up of prayer. "Pray without ceasing . . ." - maintain the childlike habit of offering up prayer in your heart to God all the time.

Jesus never mentioned unanswered prayer. He had the unlimited certainty of knowing that prayer is always answered. Do we have through the Spirit of God that inexpressible certainty that Jesus had about prayer, or do we think of the times when it seemed that God did not answer our prayer?

The danger we have is that we want to water down what Jesus said to make it mean something that aligns with our common sense. But if it were only common sense, what He said would not even be worthwhile. The things Jesus taught about prayer are supernatural truths He reveals to us.

 

쉬지 말고 기도하라

옳든 그르든 우리는 기도에 대한 각자의 개념에 따라 기도한다. 폐의 호흡이나 심장에서 피가 공급되는 것처럼 기도를 생각하는 것이 올바른 기도이다. 피가 흐르는 것과 호흡은 "쉬지 않고 " 계속된다; 우리가 의식하지 않아도 계속되고 멈추지 않는다. 예수님께서 우리를 계속 하나님과 완전하게 연결되도록 하신다는 사실은 의식하지 못한다. 하지만 주님께 순종하면 그 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 기도는 운동이 아니라 삶 자체이다. 자연스럽게 흘러나오는 기도를 막으면 안 된다. "쉬지 말고 기도하라." 당신의 마음이 언제나 하나님께 있는 가운데 어린아이와 같이 저절로 나오는 기도의 습관을 유지해야 한다.

예수님께서는 응답되지 않는 기도에 대하여 말씀하신 적이 없다. 그분은 기도란 언제나 응답된다는 무한한 확신을 갖고 계셨다. 기도에 대하여 예수님께서 가지셨던, 말로 표현할 수 없는 확신을 당신도 성령을 통하여 가지고 있는가? 아니면 하나님께서는 종종 기도를 응답하지 않으시는 때도 있다고 생각하는가? "구하는 이마다 얻을 것이요." (마 7:8) 그러나 우리는 말한다. - "하지만 . . . 글쎄요..." 하나님께서는 가끔이 아니라 매번 최선의 방법으로 기도를 응답하신다. 그렇다고 우리가 원하는 대로 그 응답이 당장 나타난다는 뜻은 아니다.

당신은 하나님께서 기도에 응답하실 것을 기대하는가?

예수님께서 말씀하신 것을 우리 상식에 맞추려고 그 내용을 희석하는 것은 매우 위험한 일이다. 만일 주님의 말씀이 다만 상식을 위한 것이라면 주님께서 그러한 말씀을 하실 필요가 없었을 것이다. 예수님께서 기도에 관하여 말씀하신 것들은 초자연적인 계시들이다.
