There is a difference between holding on to a principle and having a vision. A princhiple does not come from moral inspiration, but a vision does. People who are totally consumed with idealistic principles rarely do anything. A person's own idea of God and His attributes may actually be used to justify and rationalize his deliberate neglect of his duty. Jonah tried to excuse his disobedience by saying to God, " . . . I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm" (Jonah 4:2). I too may have the right idea of God and His attributes, but that may be the very reason why I do not do my duty. But

wherever there is vision, there is also a life of honesty and integrity, because

the vision gives me the moral incentive.

 

Our own idealistic principles may actually lull us into ruin. Examine yourself spiritually to see if you have vision, or only principles.

Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,

Or what's a heaven for?

 

"Where there is no revelation [or prophetic vision] . . ." Once we lose sight of God, we begin to be reckless. We cast off certain restraionts from activities we know are wrong.

 

We set prayer aside as well and cease having God's vision

in the little things of life.

We simply begin to act on our own initiative.

If we are eating only out of our own hand,

and

doing things soley on our own in itiative without expecting God to come in, we are on a downward path.

We have lost the vision.

Is our attitude today an attitude that flows from our vision of God? Are we expecting God to do greater things than

He has ever done before?

Is there a freshness and a vitality in our spiritual outlook?

원칙을 지키는 것과 비전을 갖는 것은 다르다. 비전은 도덕적 영감에서 오지만 원칙은 그렇지 않다. 원칙에 사로잡힌 사람은 행동하려 하지 않는다. 사람이 하나님과 하나님의 특성을 자기 나름대로 이해하면 그것은 그가 의도적으로 의무를 소홀히 하는 것을 정당화하는데 이용될 수 있다. 요나는 자기의 불순종을 변명하려고 "여호와는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인애가 큰 시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시는 하나님이신 줄을 알았습니다" (요나 4장 2절)라고 했다. 하나님과 그분의 속성을 바로 이해할 수 있지만, 그것 때문에 내가 의무를 다하지 않을 수도 있다는 것이다. 그러나

비전이 있으면 정직하고 성실한 삶이 따르게 된다. 비전은 도덕적 의욕을 불러일으키기 때문이다. 이념들은 우리를 기분 좋게 달래주기만 할 뿐, 실제로는 우리를 파멸로 이끌지도 모른다. 당신은 비전을 가지고 있는지, 아니면 단지 이념만 갖고 있는지 영적으로 검토해 보자.

 

사람은 잡은 것 너머로 나가야 하리니

아니면 천국이 무슨 소용이 있으랴?

 

비전이 없어 하나님을 보지 못하면 함부로 행동하게 된다. 우리는 하는 일들이 잘못된 줄 알면서도 그것을 막아주는 제약들을 벗어 버린다.

기도도 제쳐놓고 작은 일들 속에서 하나님을 만나는 것을 소홀히 하며

우리 생각대로 살기 시작한다.

단지 자신의 손에 있는 것을 먹으며

우리 삶에 들어오시는 하나님을 바라지 않고 모든 것을 마음대로 한다면,

영적으로 내리막길을 달리기 된다.

비전을 잃는 것이다.

우리의 자세는 하나님을 보는 비전에서 오는 것인가?

하나님이 이전에 이루신 것보다 훨씬 더 크신 일을 이루시리라 기대하고 있는가?

영적으로 바라보는 앞날에 싱그러운 생명의 힘이 깃들여 있는가?
